Acculturative Stress among Asian International Students in Singapore

Abstract

This study aims to identify the level of acculturative stress and to examine the correlations between acculturative stress or its subcategories and variables such as English language proficiency. The results show that international students were challenged by social interactions, lack of English language proficiency and financial issues. The results of this study and their possible implications for educational institutions in Singapore and Asia are considered.

  • A.M.A. Nasirudeen, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore

    A.M.A. Nasirudeen received his PhD from the National University of Singapore. He is currently a lecturer at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore and his research interests include: pedagogy development, international students’ experience and healthcare. 

  • Josephine Wat Neo Koh, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore

    Josephine Koh is a Lecturer cum Assistant Student Development Manager with the School of Health Sciences, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore). She received her Master in Social Sciences (Counselling) from Edith Cowan University, Bachelor of Nursing from Monash University and Diploma for Teachers and Trainer (Professional Level) from Cambridge University. Her research interests include: tertiary (higher) education especially in continuous education in adult learning.

  • Adeline Lee Chin Lau, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore

    Adeline Lau is a Lecturer cum Assistant Clinical Manager with the School of Health Sciences, Ngee Ann Polytechnic (Singapore). She received her Master in Education from the University of Adelaide, Bachelor of Nursing from University of Sydney and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education from National Institute of Education, Singapore. Her research interests include: higher education, clinical education and facilitation. 

  • Lim Lay Seng, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore

    Lim Lay Seng is a lecturer at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore. He received his Bachelor of Nursing from the University of Sydney and Diploma in Teaching from Cambridge University. He is also trained in critical care nursing and was a Nurse Clinician at National Heart Center Cardio Thoracic ICU for 18 years. His research interests includes: Clinical education, acculturative stress and coping mechanisms of international students. 

  • How Ai Ling, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Singapore

    How Ai Ling is a Lecturer cum IT services manager at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. She received her
    Master of Business System from Monash University (Australia) and a Bachelor of Science
    (Pharmacy) from National University of Singapore. Her research interests include: information
    technology in education, stress management and adaptation of international students.
