AI Policy
The Journal of International Students (JIS) permits the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools to support scholarly writing, provided that transparency, accuracy, and research integrity are maintained.
1. Use of AI by Authors
Authors may use AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot) for language editing, organization, and clarity. However:
- Authors must verify all content, including facts, data, and references
- AI tools must not generate original research findings, fabricate data, or manipulate results
- AI systems cannot be listed as authors
Disclosure Requirement
Authors must include a statement in the manuscript (Acknowledgments or Methods) describing:
- Whether AI tools were used
- The purpose of use
Example:
“The authors used ChatGPT to assist with language editing and manuscript organization. All content was reviewed and verified by the authors.”
2. Use of AI by Reviewers
Reviewers must maintain strict confidentiality and must not upload manuscripts or identifiable content into AI tools. AI may be used only for limited purposes such as:
- Improving clarity of feedback
- Organizing notes
All evaluations must reflect the reviewer’s independent scholarly judgment.
3. Use of AI by Editors
Editors may use AI tools for administrative support (e.g., communication, workflow organization). All editorial decisions (acceptance, revision, rejection) are made solely by human editors and are based on scholarly merit.
4. Responsibility and Integrity
Authors, reviewers, and editors remain fully responsible for:
- Accuracy and originality of content
- Ethical use of AI tools
- Compliance with journal policies
Failure to disclose or misuse of AI may result in rejection or retraction.
