Romantic relationships and their endings can significantly impact a person's well-being. This study looks at the academic well-being of emerging adults, particularly undergraduate and postgraduate students. It focuses on social and psychological factors like social connections, self-compassion, feelings of liking, and happiness. While there is a lot of research on well-being, the academic well-being of university students in India is still not well studied. This study investigates how socio-psychological factors directly influence academic well-being and whether the dissolution of a non-marital relationship (commonly known as a breakup) moderates these relationships. Using a robust analytical framework, the findings reveal that socio-psychological factors like liking, self-compassion, happiness, and social connectedness significantly impact academic well-being, while love does not. The breakup of non-marital relationships does not influence the connection between socio-psychological factors and academic well-being. These findings help address a significant gap in understanding the emotional and psychological aspects of academic well-being among university students in India, providing important insights for educators and mental health professionals.
